Power Grid Corporation of India limited (POWERGRID) was
incorporated on October 23, 1989 with an authorized share capital of
10,000 Crore as a Public Limited Company, wholly owned by the
Government of India. POWERGRID started functioning on management basis
with effect from August, 1991 and it took over transmission assets from
NTPC, NHPC, NEEPCO and other Central/Joint Sector Organizations during
1992-93 in a phased manner. In addition to this, it also took over the
operation of existing Regional Load Despatch Centers from CEA, in a phased
manner, which have been upgraded with State of-the-art Unified Load Despatch
and Communication (ULDC) schemes. According to its mandate, the Corporation,
apart from providing transmission system for evacuation of central sector
power, is also responsible for Establishment and Operation of Regional
and National Power Grids to facilitate transfer of power within and across
the Regions with Reliability, Security and Economy on sound commercial
principles. Based on its performance POWERGRID was recognized as a Mini-ratna
category-I Public Sector Undertaking in October 1998 and conferred the
status of "Navratna" by the Government of India in May
2008. POWERGRID, as the Central Transmission Utility of the country,
is playing a major role in Indian Power Sector and is also providing Open
Access on its inter-State transmission system.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF POWERGRID
As on March 31, 2011 POWERGRID is operating around 82,355 circuit kilometers
of electrical transmission lines and 135 electrical sunstations and a
transformation capacity of about 93,050 MVA and transmitting
about 50% of all the power generated in India. With the use of state-of-the-art
preventive maintenance techniques, average availability of transmission
systems is being maintained above 99%. During the fiscal year 2010-11,
its system availability was about 99.90%. In the last seven years, there
were no major grid disturbances i.e. an interruption affecting entire
region or an interregional transmission system.
Based on the network size
and operational efficiency, POWERGRID ranks among one of largest and best managed
transmission utilities in the World. POWERGRID has also ranked as the world's third largest transmission utility by the World Bank in January 2009.
In the year 2010-11, hte Company registered a turnover of 8,389 crore and earned a Net profit (After tax) of 2.697 crore thereby recording a Net margin of 32.15%. The company's gross asset base at the end of the financial year 2010-11 stood at rs. 50,351 crore as against rs. 43,202 crore at the end of financial year 2009-10. The Return on Net Worth for the company was at 12.53% in 2010-11, creating significant value for the shareholders.
During the first four years of the 11th 5-year plan i.e. April 2007 to March 2011 the company made a capital investment of 37,445 crore against an Investment Target of about 55,000 crores. The required funds were tied up from internal resources (including proceeds from IPO & FPO), bonds/term loan from the domestic sources, and Multilateral funding/ECB/Supplier's Credit. Recently, POWERGRID entered the capital market with a follow-on issue of 841,768,246 equity shares of 10 each. The mid-term gaol of the Eleventh Five Year Plan is to achieve a national power grid with inter-regional power tranfer capacity of about 28,000 MW.
POWERGRID is certified for PAS 99:2006, which integrates the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 for quality, ISO 14001:2004 for environment management and OHSAS 18001:2007 for health and safety management systems. it is also certified for Social Accountability Standard, SA 8000:2008 for all its establishments.
POWERGRID continued to implement its projects with economy and within stipulated time frame to derive maximum economic benefits.ite advanced and cost effective Integrated Project Management and Control System (IPMCS) for total project project review and perpetual monitoring, has contributed significantly.

Consultancy
Since Fiscal 1995, POWERGRID has been providing transmission-related consultancy services to a number of domestic and international projects. As on March 31, 2011, it was engaged in providing consultancy services to clients and international projects. In its consultancy role, POWERGRID has facilitated the implementation of Gol-funded projects for the distribution of electricity to end-users through the RGGVY in rural areas and, until March 2009, the Accelerated Power Development and REform Programme ("APDRP") in urban and semi-urban areas.
Telecom
POWERGRID also runs telecommunications infrastructure business, through overhead fibre-optic telecommunication cable network using ground wire ("OPGW") on its power transmission lines.As on March 31, 2011, the telecommunications network consisted of about 21,000 kilometers providing connectivity to all metros, major cities and towns. POWERGRID's telecom network has a presence in remote areas of India, such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and the North Eastern region (Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura).
it has also been granted Infrastructure Provider-I registration to construct infrastructure assets such as dark fiber, right of way, duct space and towers on November 7, 2002;Internet Service Privider Category-A License tp provide internet services on May 29, 2003 and a National Long Distance License to provide end to end bandwidth services on July 5, 2006.
